Yesterday Was National Beer Day – Did you miss it?

I guess I can’t be the only one that didn’t realize yesterday was National Beer Day … can I be?

beer day

There’s something kind of heady about the days of prohibition, salacious even. The dark and smoky speakeasies with jazz flowing from the horns and flappers daring to show a little skin, bootleggers cruising through the woods trying to evade the fuzz in their Model Ts, with jars of moonshine jangling around in the rumble seat … good times. 😉 Don’t get me wrong, I’m truly happy that it’s not prohibited now!

We toasted the anniversary of the end of prohibition with a suitable ale … don’t you think?

Not that we really need an excuse to have a cold one … but we’ll take one when we can get it. LoL

We’re getting ready to head out to another destination this weekend. Just a short trip down to the Tacoma area for the next project. This will be our first time in that neck of the woods so if you have any suggestions for a nice place to stay please let me know. Thanks!

I’m really going to miss Fidalgo Bay RV Resort. I’m already getting a little sad about leaving, which is not the norm. I’m usually ready for a change after a few weeks. But I have really become smitten with the place. The grounds, the locations, the views, the bike path … yep, I’ll be pining away until we can get back up here. I’ll put together a review in the next week or so for you guys.

Another thing we’re going to miss, shockingly enough, is one of the breweries in Mt. Vernon. The Skagit River Brewery has turned into our “spot” for when we have to go into the Burlington area, about a half hour trip east from Anacortes.

The place is very cozy and the staff members have always been friendly and attentive. There are several choices from a healthy hearty salad to your usual pub fair with a few comfort food specialties like shepherd’s pie and lamb stew in the mix as well. They also have a smoker going out back, so if you can’t find the sign just stop and smell the air for the scent of succulent beef and pork smoking away to perfection.

Then of course, there are the beers. 🙂

Somewhere along the line our palates matured and we’re now drawn to … dare I say … real beer?? Quite an evolution seeing as we were die-hard Coors Lite drinkers just a  year or so ago. LoL Now our sophisticated taste buds prefer the taste of something a little bolder and full-bodied. Joe had even developed a love of the hoppier IPAs.

I usually opt for the Skagit Brown Ale here and Joe’s had the Farm to Market Ale, Scullers IPA and the Cold Beer Pilsner just for fun. They were all great!

Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can get back up this way to enjoy our favorite little brewery. But for now I guess I better start looking for a few to check out around Tacoma.

Don’t forget, I’m open to any suggestions for an RV park in that area as well. Drop me a line if you know of one.

Oh Yes, one more thing … If you’re into Beer Travel and haven’t checked the kids from  The Society of Beer Travelers out yet and gotten your Beer Passport, get on over there. 🙂

Yes! You too can get this awesome beer society swag!!

~Cheers~

Saratoga Resort and Spa & Snowy Mountain Brewery

Laptop Udate – My laptop has been in the shop for a week and a half now. 🙁 The bad news is it could take three weeks or more. Apparently he’s cloning my hard drive. I don’t know anything about the process but it seems like an awfully long time. Right?

Anyway, the good news is he thinks at the very least he’ll be able to get my data on a new drive for me. So, even if the motherboard is shot I’ll still have my data. But at that point I’ll still need to buy a new laptop.  I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that the hard drive is the only problem.

I’ve found I really don’t like working on Mr. G’s laptop. Hence no posts recently. 🙁

But sitting here at the laundromat I came across a few pics from a trip we took a couple weeks ago and I thought I’d share using my phone.

The weather wasn’t all that great that weekend but we decided to take a cruise down to Saratoga,  WY anyway. You might think we were headed to the hot springs,  but no.

In our quest to fill in our little blue Beer Travel Passport we made our way out to the Snowy Mountain Brewery.

image

The place was beautiful and thankfully not at all pretentious. We had lunch at the pub with the brew room visible behind the bar.

image

I know it’s not a great shot but you can just barely see the brew room behind the tap pulls.

The atmosphere is the pub was decidedly sports themed. I was surprised to see it wasn’t all Wyoming or Colorado based.

image

Yep, that’s New England’s own Tom Brady folks.

While the vibe in the pub was comfy and fun …

image

With cool seating options …

image

… we didn’t spend the entire afternoon bellied up to the bar. Shocking, I know.

After lunch, a bison burger for Mr. G and a black angus burger for me, we headed over to the game room.

image

It appeared I was in for my first chess lesson.

image

As you can see below, the teacher let the student win. Perhaps to build confidence only to snatch it away on the next go round.

image

With my head swimming with too much planning and strategy,  we decided to move over and just relax for a bit before heading home.

image

Cool moose on wheels …

image

Rodeo anyone … ?

image

Awesome growlers to go …

image

Which reminds me … the beer! It was fabulous! We both started out with the Honey Badger Ale.

image

After that Mr. G. had a High Altitude Hellas, not bad, and I had the Chocolate Meltdown Porter, deee-lish! Dessert in a mug folks. 🙂 You can see the porter and Hellas in the chess pics above.

The Saratoga Resort and Spa was voted one if the top ten beer American Luxery Beer Vacations by CNN Travel and it’s easy to see why. Everything from the service and ambiance to the food and brew was fabulous.

The Saratoga Resort & Spa and Snowy Mountain Brewery was the perfect combination of luxury lodge and playful pub. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to get back and experience the spa before we leave. Or maybe rent a couple of quads for the day …

image

or maybe just sit and relax on the front porch sipping a micro-brew.

image

Guess that’s all for now.  Check back soon for pics from our next weekend getaway.

Hint – If I considered The Saratoga Resort and Spa luxury lodge-like the only way I could describe the next place would be  “American Hustle”. I’m talking straight out of the 70’s! 🙂 LoL

~Cheers ~

It’s Freezing! No, it’s just the wind…

I hate when people say that. It’s like the dry heat thing. People in the desert alway say stuff like “It’s okay because it’s a dry heat”. Sorry, but I say 110 is flipping hot! I don’t care if it’s dry or not. Of course 110 actually sounds pretty good to me right now. I can’t seem to kill this chill.

I know I shouldn’t complain because so many states have had dangerously cold temps and we are certainly far from those. But still, this weekend and today are really getting to me. I just can’t take the cold. Oh man, I sound like one of the old folks. Hmmm… so be it.

We did manage to get out of pj’s our on Sunday to brave the crazy winds and intermittent rain. Oak Harbor was our destination so we went through Deception Pass. It was way too cold and windy for me to get out and take pics but here are a couple from last year. It’s okay, things still look the same. Honest. 😉

Hopefully we’ll get a chance to get back there when the sun is shining because the views really are spectacular.

We headed to a place called Flyers Restaurant and Brewery in Oak Harbor. We had been there last year and loved it so we couldn’t wait to get back. I hate to say it but we were a little disappointed. I’d back on the Weight Watchers plan (yet again) and what I ordered was great.

I guess it would be hard to mess this up. I had no idea there would be so many pita chips. I stuck to only having 3.

Unfortunately Mr. G’s choice left a little to be desired. It was supposed to be a Cuban Sandwich. While it was okay, it just didn’t have the usual pizzazz you expect from a Cuban Sandwich.

Our recent experience won’t keep us from going back because the service is always awesome and the beer is divine! 🙂

I managed to keep myself in check and only had one so I made it the darker Barnstormer Brown Ale. Good stuff and they’ve got the ribbons to show it!!

From there we did a little driving around and with the warmth of the Barnstormer in me I managed to get out of the truck for a few pics. This is Oak Harbor off Route 20.

One of the things I have missed the most in the past two years is having my own car. Yes, I have the truck at my disposal if I need it during the day. But that involves getting up (and staying up) at 5:15 a.m. to take Mr. G to work. Ugg, mornings are not my thing so I usually try to avoid needing the truck as much as possible.

So I’m happy to say I found the perfect car for me over the weekend! It’s a little two-seater, great on gas and solid as a rock!

Believe it or not, this little park is called Flintstone Park. Yes, really!

Once we got back into Anacortes we took another ride out to the Cap Sante to check out the tanker traffic.

This was right around the time my hands and feet were freezing again so we headed back to the H.O.W. for something hot to drink. Yes, the truck thermometer said 44 degrees but it was cold! Even when the wind wasn’t blowing, which wasn’t often, so there! 😉

On the way back up away from the bay we saw this funky house.

A little blurry but it was one of those "Shoot where's my camera?" moments.

This shot is a little better. I would love to see the inside of this place!

It certainly is eclectic!

No matter what you might think about the exterior of the place, there’s no doubt the property has a spectacular view. You can just see a glimpse of it in the side mirror. Sweet 🙂

I think I’ll leave you with those images for now. Here comes the rain again and I’m on the prowl for a sneaky little leak today.

Hey, any Eurythmics fans out there? This one’s for you…

Happy Monday!  🙂
